Why do I need a custom domain email address when I have more than 400 subscribers?

If your AWeber account has more than 400 subscribers, you are required to send emails from a custom domain email address (such as you@yourbusiness.com) rather than a free email address like Gmail or Yahoo Mail. This requirement exists to protect your deliverability and ensure compliance with email authentication standards.

Why is a custom domain required?

Free email providers like Gmail and Yahoo enforce strict DMARC policies that block unauthorized use of their domains for bulk sending. When you send to a large audience using a free email address, those providers may reject or filter your messages, causing deliverability failures for your subscribers.

To protect your sending reputation and ensure your emails reach inboxes, AWeber requires accounts with more than 400 subscribers to use a custom domain email address with proper authentication in place.

What you need to do

If your account has grown past 400 subscribers and you are still using a free email address as your "From" address, take these steps:

  1. Obtain a custom domain email address (for example, yourname@yourbusiness.com).

  2. Add and verify your custom email address in AWeber.

  3. Set up DKIM and DMARC authentication for your domain.

  4. Update your list settings to use your custom domain email as the "From" address.

What happens if I do not comply?

AWeber verifies your domain authentication status before every broadcast send. If your account has more than 400 subscribers and your "From" address is not authenticated, your broadcast will be returned to Draft status and will not be sent.
