What happens when someone is manually unsubscribed?

When a subscriber is manually unsubscribed from your list, their status changes to "unsubscribed" and they will no longer receive emails from that list. Manual unsubscribes can occur in several ways, each serving to protect your list quality and email deliverability.

How manual unsubscribes occur

There are three primary ways a subscriber can be manually unsubscribed:

Account Owner Action: You may choose to manually unsubscribe someone from your list. This might happen if a subscriber contacts you directly asking to be removed, if you're cleaning your list, or if you're managing subscription preferences for a contact.

Admin or User Action: If you have team members with access to your AWeber account, any Admin or authorized user can manually unsubscribe subscribers. This ensures your team can respond to unsubscribe requests and manage your list effectively.

AWeber Proactive Unsubscribe: AWeber may automatically unsubscribe certain email addresses to protect your sender reputation and deliverability. This happens when our systems detect indicators that an email address may not be legitimate or could harm your ability to reach your subscribers' inboxes.

Why AWeber may proactively unsubscribe

AWeber monitors subscriber information to identify potential deliverability risks. When we detect signs that an email address could cause problems, we take action on your behalf. This can happen for several reasons, including when an address shows characteristics of:

  • Invalid or non-existent email addresses

  • Spam traps or honeypot addresses

  • Addresses with patterns indicating they were not legitimately obtained

  • Other indicators that suggest the address could negatively impact your sender reputation

By removing these addresses before you send to them, AWeber helps maintain your high deliverability rates and protects your ability to reach engaged subscribers.

What this means for your list

When subscribers are manually unsubscribed, they remain in your list with an "unsubscribed" status. You can still view their records and any historical activity, but they won't receive future broadcasts or workflow messages from that list.

This protective approach ensures your emails continue reaching the inboxes of subscribers who want to hear from you, maintaining the health and effectiveness of your email marketing efforts.
